We don't know why they didn't use any footage of Doug and Bill Horton in jail together. Could've been any number of reasons.
 
JS thanks for the clarification - I had read the spoilers but thought maybe it was a way to introduce the character and connection to Doug by having him in a flashback. I think he said something like “see you later Bill,” which threw me off. But I get the artistic choice to go with black and white.

I just watched and the other black and white clips are of an unknown character (go to the Crystal Ball if you want to know who the other young man in jail is). Funny that he was reading the story of Davy Crockett. Bill Hayes (Doug) had a hit song, The Ballad of Davy Crockett, in 1956. Here's the book the young man is reading, and the actual picture the prop department used of Bill Hayes dressed as Davy Crockett from back in the day.

Robin, I doubt if many kids in my school were even aware of the soaps. The only show I can recall being mentioned was Superman. E.g., “Hey, did you see Superman last night?”

Poirot, yes, I agree. That is why I assumed that scene, with new actors, was inserted. i.e. just to give that nod to Bill's hit recording. But then, when they added the other scene with new actors, who, I assumed were supposed to be Doug and Bill, I thought they had not been able to get permission to show Ed Mallory (Bill Horton) clips.
 
Unfortunately, since I wasn’t watching then wayback flashbacks or returns from the distant past were lost on me. That said, here are a few comments.

It’s too bad that Doug’s hugs didn’t prevent Lucas from doing things that landed him in prison.
If Ciara is back, where’s Ben? With a few camera tricks there could have been a Ben-Alex meeting.
When people were gushing over pictures of Baby Bo, how would people have reacted if the child looked like Ben or far worse Grandpa Clyde?

Closed captioning spelled Liz's daughter, as Noelle. This was the way it was spelled when she was on the show.

Ciara has her mom's talent of opening a mystery box. What's inside?

We found out today Ciara's daughter's name is Addie. We know Bo and Addie are well. What about Ben?

Interesting to see a new flashback with Doug and Bill in jail since they've shown the original one several times
over the years. We find out this week why it was done.

I enjoyed all the flashbacks with Julie/Steven and others with Doug since I wasn't watching years ago.

Tomorrow is the funeral. Have your tissues ready.
 
I love that we quickly moved to another day. Love the returning characters, especially Stephen Schnetzer (Steven). I've loved him forever. I loved this show.

Did anyone mention Claire? I didn't fast forward at all but I'm not always completely attentive. I don't even remember where Claire is. Jail, psych ward or off someplace? Not sure if Lucas mentioned Allie either. I could see her not feeling much connection to the Hortons though.

I admit the only thing that annoyed me was Ciara getting the box open. I would have preferred Lucas or Marie or even Julie just finally getting it. Even though Ciara has been around as a character forever I just have no connection to her now.

They've used the clips of Doug and Bill in jail together in recent years. The scenes of the younger man in jail weren't recreated flashbacks. The young man is a new character. There's a thread in the Crystal Ball forum if you want to be spoiled on his identity (Mystery character's identity revealed).

No, the show chose to spell her name as Noel. I believe the name was chosen because it was as close to Neil as they could get for a girl's name. It's often misspelled online as Noelle.
