Dark shot of the City, Marlena's office - Kayla stops by as Marlena's doing paperwork. They wish each other Happy Thanksgiving and recap the Kiriakis/Brady celebration. Kayla was called in before dessert. John ditched Marlena for a sudden ISA case. Steve doesn't know anything about it despite being his business partner.

K-Mansion Living Room - Maggie looks at Victor's portrait. Sarah comes in with her cane and they talk about how nice it was to join Kayla's family. Maggie misses Victor. Maggie is thankful for her granddaughter and her walking-again daughter. (Xander is sleeping on the floor by the crib and they selfishly don't show us.) They were invited to Julie's for their meal. Sarah can't take another meal; Maggie suggests dropping by for dessert. Sarah has fond memories of Dad's side of the family: Tom's speeches, Alice's cooking, and Doug's singing.

Price-Carver Townhouse - Abe is reading (off-screen) to the kids. Paulina wants to chat with Lani and hear gossip. Lani will eventually return to Salem, it's their home. They video chat with Julie a lot. Eli carved out time to go to Julie's.

Horton House Dining Room - Eli and Jennifer talk about JJ and Chad having sudden urgent business. Eli adores Doug and Julie and can't wait to spend time with him.

Horton Living Room - Replay of Julie with the candlesticks. Jack staggers in and says he couldn't wake Doug up. He's so sorry. Julie drops the candlesticks. She says Doug can't be gone. Jack checked thoroughly because Doug is a deep sleeper.

Horton Dining Room - Jennifer and Eli talk about the twins. Jules is like her namesake. Jack enters. Jennifer thinks the kids are making excuses for not being ready, hopes he had better luck with Doug. Jack's face says it all.

Horton Living Room - Julie is sitting on the chair staring off. Eli comes in and asks what he can do? He kneels down to her and they hug. She just needs him to be with her.

Horton Dining Room - Jack and Jennifer discuss Doug. The world will be dimmer without him. Their grandkids adored Doug. Jennifer doesn't want them to be here. Jack will take them to Maggie's and tell her what's going on. They'll also take care of the details for Julie. Jennifer will call the family. Jack leaves. Jennifer dials.

Living Room Limbo Set - Hope enters the room and picks up the phone. It rings. She was just about to call Jennifer. (We get a "cuz", too.) Jennifer breaks the news that Doug passed away.

Marlena's Office - Kayla finishes a call from Jack. She'll send someone. She tells Marlena that Doug passed away.

Price-Carver Townhouse - Paulina talks about what a good guy Eli is for doting on Julie. Lani talks about how the Hortons accepted Eli, especially Doug and Julie.

Horton Living Room - Jack enters and tells them Jennifer called Hope, and that an ambulance is coming for Doug. Julie wants to see him first. Eli will be with her.

Horton Dining Room/Hope's Living Room - Hope's voice cracks. She asks about Julie. She'll be there soon.

Horton House, Doug and Julie's Room - Julie enters. Doug looks like an angel. Eli offers her privacy.

Kmansion Living Room - Sarah plans to tell Xander what's going on tonight. She and Maggie stand up. Jack comes in. He left Thomas and Charlotte in the foyer.

Marlena's Office - Kayla has the ambulance on standby to give the family time. Marlena talks about how Doug and Julie loved each other for 50 years. Kayla wishes someone was there for Hope like Hope was there for her when Pop died.

Horton Dining Room/Hope's Living Room - Jennifer and Hope talk about Doug. Julie has the family and will get a big hug from Jennifer on behalf of Hope. Hope laments not being closer, not visiting more, not saying goodbye. Jennifer reminds her Doug understood and adored her as his princess. Hope tears up. After the call, she has a flashback to her 18th birthday.

Flashback: Doug and Julie give her a gift. It's a gold watch engraved "December 29, 1983, Remember and Smile." To remember her 18th birthday. Doug tells Hope he wishes her a wonderful life. She will take with her several blessings: Her health, a terrific brain, beauty, and our wealth, too. Always know that you are loved and cherished as on the day she was born.

Hope's Living Room - Hope ends her flashback and cries. "Daddy, daddy." Shawn-D enters. He asks if something's wrong with Dad? She says it's Grandpa Doug.

Horton Living Room - Pan across the pictures (Young Tom and Alice from the sepia episode, Addie and Julie in a wedding gown (?), Doug and Julie (looks like a real-life Bill/Susan Hayes photo), Tom and Alice, Doug, Doug and Julie). Eli enters and looks at the pictures. His phone rings. Lani asks if he's coming back soon because dinner is ready. Eli tells her he got sad news and won't be back soon.

Doug and Julie's Room - Julie sits down by Doug. She laments they knew this day was coming but she still wasn't ready. She thinks about the way he looked at her, spoke to her, laid next to her, for their lifetime of love. His love was her strength. How can she go on without him? She always had trouble saying goodbye to him. She remembers a beach date they made (flashback circa early 1970s: Doug says "bonsoir, enchanté, madamoiselle).

Horton Living Room - Eli finishes a call with Scotty. He'll give grandma his love. Lani enters. She had to be there for him and Julie. They talk about Julie and Doug's love and inseparability.

Horton Dining Room - Jennifer finishes a call with Lucas whose love will be sent to Julie. She looks at pictures. Mustache Doug and 1980s Hair Hope, Jennifer sticking out her tongue and pinching Jack's cheeks, Doug and Julie (looks like early 2000s), a bunch of Hortons (Jason Cook's Shawn-Douglas, Bo, Lucas, Jennifer, Mike, Doug, Jennifer, Hope, Julie, Maggie, Mickey, Alice, and two kids - my guess is Abby and Will), more recent but not yet gray Jack with Jennifer, Doug in his white shirt, and Thomas, Chad, and Charlotte. She has a flashback of Doug telling Jennifer that Julie has feelings for every guy she's ever cared for, but he isn't jealous because he gets to go home with her every night (looks like late 1990s during Jack and Jennifer's separation/Jack's recast).

Hope's Living Room - Shawn-D says grampa was a great man. Hope tells her Doug was proud of him before he was born, and was so anxious to meet him. Flashback to pregnant Hope in 1985 or so. Doug gives Hope a blanket Addie made (despite not knowing how to knit) when she was expecting Hope. Back in the present day, Hope talks about how thrilled Shawn-D's grampas were and how proud they were of him. That never changed.

Hope's Living Room - Hope looks at a picture of Doug (a different one, he's in a tux). She has a flashback wherein she tells Doug as they are seated at a piano (with his early 1980s mustache) to play more music for her. She is teary. Back in the present, she kisses her hand and places it on the picture. Shawn-D comes in. Hope is going to see Bo.

K-Mansion Living Room - Maggie is looking through a photo album (we see a picture of her and Mickey). She has a flashback to dancing with Doug (doing a samba or something, looks like one of the hospital benefits they did in the 1970s). Back in the present, Sarah enters. She updated Xander. Maggie tells her about her flashback (it was the hospital variety show!!). Doug was effortlessly charming. Maggie looks at Victor's portrait. She knows what Julie is going through right now. Maggie needs to go be with Julie now. Sarah will accompany her.

Doug and Julie's Room - Kayla knocks gently on the door. She checks on Julie. Julie asks if her time is up? Kayla says she has all the time she needs. Julie thinks if she'd been the one to wake him, he would have woken up. Kayla says it was just his time. Julie tells Doug she'll love him forever. She and Kayla leave the room.

Horton Living Room - Eli thinks he should check on grandma. Lani thinks they can wait a few minutes. Jack and Jennifer enter. They want to set the food out if anyone's hungry. Eli has no appetite. Julie and Kayla enter. Julie greets Lani, who tells her Doug was a beautiful person in every way. Jennifer and Julie hug.

Horton Dining Room - Eli brings in the turkey. The table is set but the room is empty. Jack comes in. He thinks it's up to them to lift everyone's spirits like Doug would have. He toasts Doug, a gentlemen from a bygone era whose charisma touched everyone he ever met.

Horton Living Room - Julie sits in silence between Jennifer and Lani. Lani offers more tea. Julie thanks Jennifer for calling Hope, she will call when she can. Jennifer tells her there's no need. (There's a picture of Lucas and I think Sarah on the mantle behind them.) Sarah and Maggie enter. Julie sees that Sarah is walking. Sarah compliments Doug. Paulina enters - she hopes she's not intruding. She admired Doug so much and wanted to pay her respects. Julie says Doug admired Paulina's style and spirit. Marlena enters, tells Julie that Doug and Julie's love and admiration were - are an inspiration to them all. Julie's voice gets shaky as she thanks her friends and family for the support. Close up on Julie.

Hope's Living Room - Shawn-Douglas calls Ciara with some bad news.

Hospital Room - Hope tells Bo (we only see his arm with a monitor attached) that her dad died tonight. The only person who made her feel as safe and loved as her dad was him. She really needs him now. She clasps his hand. Bo's thumb moves, strokes her hand. Hope looks hopeful. END

Addie and Julie in a wedding gown (?),
That's a picture of Maggie in her wedding gown from 1974. Not sure who the woman is with her. I poked around and believe she is Mrs. Jennings, the minister's wife. Jason47 can confirm, or tell us who she is if she isn't Mrs. Jennings.

Grab a tissue for this one, but it was nice. I felt for Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie).

I wish some of these people were sticking around. I miss the family vibes this show used to highlight (and I don't mean the DiMeras or the Kiriakises fighting over their stupid companies). I wish Eli and Lani and Ben and Ciara and their kids could be in town. They need more young happy families. When Sarah was talking about her childhood and Doug singing, all I could think was, "Would it hurt to have scenes like that on screen once in a while?"

So weird that Sarah and Maggie talked about how fun the dinner was at the pub. Not from how we saw it ending.

Also feel cheated. I want to see Xander with Victoria, Charlotte and Thomas

The Julie scenes felt a bit too much. I didn't like her seeing her acting with a Doug stand in. It seemed intrusive.

I liked the group of women at the end supporting her, even Paulina I guess. And the flashbacks were good, especially the ones that were before my time. The legs on Suzanne Rogers (Maggie)!

I remember that one interview after Bill Hayes (Doug) died and Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie) said they discussed with her how to handle Doug's death on the show. Kudos to her for wanting it to happen somewhat on-screen, as opposed to maybe Doug and Julie going on a trip and having Doug die while they were away, and her calling (off-screen) to tell the family. Kind of like how they handled Peggy McCay's (Caroline) death. Caroline was off-screen, staying with Kimberly in California. Kim called the family to tell them that Ma had died during the night.

My heart breaks for Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie). Those scenes had to be so heartbreaking, to go through all of that again.

This episode was so sad.
Oh rf, you are so right, I wondered how she was able to keep up but she is a professional as well as a grieving wife. I felt they did a great job on this episode. It was to me a tribute without being too preachy. Long may you wave Doug, and oh please tell Stan that I love him. Thank you.

So weird that Sarah and Maggie talked about how fun the dinner was at the pub. Not from how we saw it ending.
They must have the ability to tune out Shaggy Phil’s dishonesty and lack of manners. As for the episode, it was sad, but very well done — just what viewers wanted for the beloved Doug. And instead of just being filler, the use of flashbacks was informative and entertaining.

Well done, Jason. This was a tough one to write up. I was gutted by the time it ended.

Everyone did an excellent job, very tasteful and poignant.

As we all said already, it had to have been almost impossible for Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie) to relive the loss of her husband. She delivered a genuine and heartbreaking performance.
