10/1/2024 - Donuts and Happy Birthday Jimmy Carter

Poirot, just my opinion but I think the the lack of interest in neighborhoods/community has happened most everywhere and there are probably several reasons. In a neighborhood like yours and a community like mine, the main reason may be age. Most at our age just don't have the energy or the drive to want to do what they once did. But society also has changed. I believe television was the beginning--and look where we are now, with cell phones, computers, and other electronics. When I was growing up here families visited all the time and there were parties and card games or dominoes (or in Texas, the very popular game, back then, of 42). My parents even had square dances in our garage! Now almost nobody visits except within one's own family--for those who are blessed to have family living in the community.

Robin, your very happy-looking cow brings to mind something that's been bothering me for a long time. All of the environmental babble we've been hearing for years now about cows and their harmful passing of gas has me scratching my head and wondering if I'm living on a different planet. I've spent a considerable amount of time up close and personal with cows and I honestly can't recall ever being aware of a cow passing gas (hearing it or smelling it). Horses, yes, absolutely, on both counts. But cows, no. Of course there's an unpleasant smell at cow lots or barns where they're kept in confinement but it's easy to see where that's coming from. I can't tell you scientifically whether they do pass gas or not, only that I've never been aware of it.

Oh, OC.........thanks, and yes, that is what I figure has gone on with neighborhoods.

Always thought the yammer about cows and gas was attempts at making jokes, but like other things, spread around as fact. A shame. Glad you can attest to what is the TRUTH! There were a great many farmers in this area when I first moved here, and I lived rural....can't say I ever smelled anything unpleasant. Oh, still are farmers, just not as many, lol.
