1/9/25 - Donuts and National Day of Mourning

27 and extremely windy but sunny.

Grateful for it all as compared to parts of California undergoing the life-altering event of the fires. My prayers are with them.

I know a few people out there, family included, near the Warning Zone, and I am thinking about them.

Let's all take a few minutes to be still and reflect on what is happening all around us, no matter how far away. So much in life is random, and we must take stock of the here and now and put things into perspective.

Good reminders to count our blessings and be grateful for them.

I almost never watch funerals or ceremonies of any kind and had not planned to watch the one this morning. But I found myself watching it for a while. I do agree that President Carter was an honorable man, true to his personal beliefs.

It's a beautiful morning here. I had thought I could never enjoy snow again and I'd been dreading the arrival of it. But since I don't have to go anywhere or do anything in it, and the temperature is actually warmer than it's been all week, I'm finding it rather pleasant. When I went out to feed the birds earlier there was only 3/4" on the ground. Dead grass tips still poking through, so not all that pretty. But It's been snowing for a couple of hours, now nearly 2" and very nice. I think tomorrow morning may be when things get nasty with ice, unless the temperatures hold at around 32* or above.

I've got more birds than I've seen all year. They were excited to be fed. Cardinals, titmice, juncos, white-crowned sparrows, woodpecker, mourning doves, and a chickadee. Earl was there earlier. The birds are standoffish as long as he's eating. The cardinals are the boldest with him though. They also seem to rule the roost when it comes to the other birds.

So glad the outside doings got wrapped up late yesterday. I'd been waiting for a UPS delivery that was due a couple of days earlier. (I had about 3 from Amazon that were days late over the past week). When my niece and I were coming home from feeding we saw the UPS truck heading in my direction. Yea! Wrong.... It buzzed on past my driveway, dust flying in its trail. There's only one residence past mine and it's my niece's place, and she said she didn't have anything coming. It was a little before 5 pm. I didn't want this package left out somewhere so I kept watching for delivery notice online and finally got one at nearly 5:30, close to sundown. It was NOT at my house so I got in my car and drove to the county road and found it on the ground up against my cattleguard. If I hadn't, it would have been covered in snow this morning--unless someone else saw it and took it. It was a heavy box. I guess the new guys are afraid to venture into a driveway where they can't see a house. Around here cattleguards often lead to endless pastures. But there IS a sign with my county road name on it!

Okay, maybe I need to put out more birdseed on the scaffolding. I'm sitting a couple of feet in from big windows and the birds (mostly cardinals) are fluttering and hovering outside the windows. Almost creepy. I think they're waiting turns for the little feeder that sticks by suction to the window. It's only big enough for one bird at a time to fit in. Usually only titmice feed there but the cardinals are taking over it today.

Morning.... I overslept and missed the beginning of the service....
we are waiting for another 1-3 inches of snow starting later this afternoon.... yippee....

Update on my sisters, one is still evacuated the other is still in a ready "SET" go situation, she's in the Set position. But today her 95 year old mother in law wanted to go to see her doctor. Fires be damned. So, my sister is driving her to the doctors. I told my sister could use the time to distract her from the fire. Ya, I know not helpful.

According to the plow map Plowy McPlowFace did our street. Not sure who will be back tomorrow to clear the street. Not our street as the HOA doesn't pay for that, and my driveway is still iced over. So after today yet another day trapped in the house. HB's battery is dead, and his tire is flat, so it's no help.

Happy Thursday...

I read somewhere that UPS & Fed Ex appreciate if you give directions when you live rural, and are not located right on the road. I.E. "go a mile on road, turn left at crossroads mile and half......etc.
Sometimes I wonder how many pkgs. are stolen because they were just left on side of a road. Our mail persons are so caring at times. Have found note in mail box that a package was taken back to the post office. (this was when I lived out in the country, and tho it was only 1/2 mile to my house, they would not come down the road. Twice I found pkgs on the ground behind the mail box post.
No wonder so many folks opt to have a mail box IN the post office. Our P.O. ran out of them, actually bought a multi box stand they put right outside the P.O. door.

Another cold morning. It's 34 and cloudy now. The forecast changed overnight. My area may get
over 4 inches of snow. I won't know until Friday morning how much there is.

The time has changed when the snow arrives by three hours. Kids in the big town are going home
two hours early. The other schools might be doing that too.

A busy morning for me. I left just before 7 to go shopping. The highway already busy and I had to wait
awhile to get on the road. I came home around 9 and only put the cold stuff away since I wanted to
get to the little library. I walked one time around before lunch. I saw 10 or 11 deer in the field. It's probably
the first time they've been out and about with the cold weather. I put birdseed out. Since there's no mail
today, I probably won't be going outside again.

OC, enjoy the birds. As far as I know, bird flu isn't hurting song birds. I'm not seeing a lot of variety of birds
since the black birds are coming by.

robin, have you checked if a lawn service would come by and get your driveway taken care of? It wouldn't
hurt to ask. Check YouTube later. Someone might have the whole funeral posted.

rf, take care driving in the rain when you go to work.

Wilde Woman, enjoy the sunny day.

I hope everyone has a good afternoon.

Kat, I hadn't thought about Bird Flu and songbirds. I've wondered about it getting in the cattle, though have not heard of such in the area so far. My impression has been that it's mostly been in dairy cattle. I'm thinking both animals and people living in confinement are at greater risk with any kind of diseases.
Like me, you may be ready for this snow business to go ahead and do what it's going to do so we can get past it. Hope it doesn't get too bad for you.

Poirot, our USpost office, which is located in a different town now, still has the tiny building which used to house our community post office. They have put one of those mulit-box things like you described at that little building. Some of the people who live right there in the center of the community use it. Most of us who live several miles away wouldn't want to have to drive there everyday to get our mail. But our mail carriers over the years have always been really good. We get to know them and they go out of their way to accommodate us. They'll even bring a box to our house if it doesn't fit in the big rural boxes we all have. It's UPS and FedX that give us fits. Some of them are really good but I think they have such a constant stream of turn over, most of them never bother to acquaint themselves with the routes and they usually get here late in the day and have up to more than 60 miles to get back to their base so they do whatever is convenient. I have filled out the "delivery instructions" thing on Amazon before but it didn't make any difference. Been thinking I'll try it again.

Robin, it can't be very encouraging to hear of your sister getting yanked around for other things, when she might need to be evacuating at any moment, though I guess if they were gone to the doctor they at least would not be in the danger area if that happened. It's hard for me to understand why people are so reluctant to leave when things have gotten to such a dangerous point all around them, be it fires or hurricanes or whatever. I do understand how difficult it would be to leave but in the fire situations there is often just not room for error. Today as I was sitting here enjoying the snow, I kept thinking I wish it could be falling in California. I pray it will somehow get under control soon. I also hope you'll get relief with your road conditions there in Kansas soon. How very frustrating.

Well, something is falling here again, very fine. I can't tell if it's sleet or snow or what. The temperature is somewhere between 30* and 40*, depending of which of my 4 sources to believe.

It started snowing here around 2. It's been a heavy snow. My street and driveway covered. There's a
small break from the heavy snow for awhile. It's probably good kids left schools early. I hope the
smaller schools left early too since they drive on the back and dirt roads.

robin, I hope your son won't need surgery.

OC, since my shopping done I don't have plans to go anywhere soon.

Kat,

I want your 4 inches! We are expecting 13+

We got a dose of sleet about 45 minutes before the snow started. It’s heavy, wet fat flakes.

I hope everyone that’s getting this mess stays warm and safe and keeps power

prayers are being said constantly, for everyone. So many areas having problems...May the good Lord watch over and protect us all, God Bless you! Stay safe, stay well!

So I am reading here about so many of you having or expecting snow, tho mostly down south, and am surprised, as here, up north, not the case. But I get curious enough, and go and open my garage door (it is dark here) and son of a gun, yep it snowed, no idea when, am sure not long ago. LOL as I first looked at the forecast, which doesn't mention even a single snowflake until Sunday! That is what happens when I don't open the blinds. See, the sun had come out, & I have lots of windows, so...was plenty light inside.....so really no idea what was going on out.....plus I had TV on (I never watch TV during day, you can tell I was bored and not wanting to do any of the things I should have been taken care of. Am having a problem with computer, trying to see if I could solve, blah, blah.
You know, when I lived in Illinois, all kinds of friends, neighbors family, always in touch. Long time ago, things change. And up here, neighbors just don't seem to be as social as in Illinois. Maybe times change......guess am just an old fuddy duddy. LOL

Kris, I didn't realize the middle of the state was getting more snow than me. I had a break for about
two hours. It's snowing again. I'll know tomorrow how much there it is. I'm glad it's in the 20s tonight
instead of the teens.

My relief was actually on time tonight in spite of rain. Using my Dominos gift card to get supper. It's raining it was sprinkling when I came in so silly me left umbrellain car

once upon a time, I was younger, more energetic, more able to get done what needed to get done. And the years went by, so much changed. My family grew up.....and away as their lives changed. Far away as it has turned out. My husband passed away, as did so many of my close relatives. My neighbors here sold, moved, retired and became hermits, I swear. Well, a lot go down south for the winter. My life has changed a lot now, I stay home, watch TV...no longer bowl which I loved, but can't any more. And, as you probably guessed, am just in a blue mood, have been for a while. Here at the Spectator, changes as well. Wayne sort of semi-retired, he married and moved down south. We lost a few regulars, who passed away.......Days went to streaming which meant a lot of fans are no longer able to see the show. In addition, the show has had a lot of behind the scenes turmoil, which hopefully has settled down now. Tis a shame Days films so far ahead, but perhaps they will reduce the time between filming and airing and get back on track.

Kat,

It’s crazy to see the parts of AR that always get snow get so little compared to what they are predicting for us.

I’m curious what we will end up with overnight as well.

So today I was looking for something to do. I'd REALLY like to take Christmas down, but alas, I can't get my car out to get the crates to bring back to the house so, I'm stuck here. Anyway I was watching the movie The Creature from the Black Lagoon. The classic 1954 version. AS they showed the lagoon, I told HB that the Lagoon is located in Universal City. Or was. We went to the park and had lunch at the little place that looked over the lagoon. So I went on a search of my slides to find a picture of us at the park. Instead I found Cowgirl Robin....
cowgirl robin.JPG
I am about 5 and I'm riding this fine pinto.
It's snowing like mad, school is canceled for tomorrow. My sister's situations haven't changed. Which is good staying the same is better than getting worse.

Oh Robin, I love the picture of you and the pinto. Reminds me of the horse I grew up with, Pinto. Hoping things improve for your sisters--and for your son.

Poirot, I can tell you, times have changed. In my tiny community, everybody visited when I was young. Now nobody does unless family happens to live nearby. I drive past the homes of friends I grew up with but now rarely ever see them. People--especially our age--just stay closed up in their houses anymore except to go out for doctor appointments or other basic essentials. Those younger than us are so busy working and going to events of their kids or grandkids, they don't have time for anything else.
