SPOILER !! Week Nov 18

Really???? What I read.............

No, typically TV shows that are only available on streaming platforms are not counted during traditional sweeps periods, as the measurement systems used for sweeps primarily focus on live television broadcasts and do not fully capture streaming viewership data, especially when it comes to ad-supported streaming services with different advertising models compared to traditional TV.

However, I remember when various homes were chosen by Nielsen to be monitored for a week, all the TV programs that were watched. (I was one of those once....) If they are still doing that, then they do have info as to the number watching streaming shows.

Nielsen still exists and still selects people/families to monitor. Only now it's a gizmo attached to your TV instead of a written log for each TV set.

I think Days probably still counts with streaming (for the ratings) because it's streamed daily, M-F, as opposed to shows that have a set number of episodes that they drop at certain times. They can tell who is watching, when they watch the episodes, at what time, for how long, what they rewind, what the fast forward through, what they skip, etc.

Yes, a friend had the monitor attached to the T V.........however it doesn't tell you who is watching, how many, or if the TV is on in the living room or bedroom, and no one in the room. LOL

I heard once that newer TVs had some built in chip or something, so that info as to what channel/program was on, thus the rating people who check a lot of TVs at one time, and no one knows. I should imagine now they certainly would not want to alert viewers as to how they are gathering info........invasion of privacy, etc.

No, they don't have chips in TV sets that automatically know what you're watching. But with streaming services, they can tell everything you are watching at any given time. The only way your viewing habits can be tracked is via streaming services, or if you're a Nielsen participant.

You know, a lot of years ago, I was able to get Days a day ahead. Don't remember why or how, but it is what got me to begin doing summaries "day ahead". There were 3 people who had a site with summaries, that I visited..........and I volunteered there to be a sub. So when one of them wanted to retire, I was asked to join up, one day a week. Said yes........and it all led to my taking over when the others retired, and here I am. However, was so difficult 5 days a week, and thankfully, posters volunteered, for which I was so grateful. Days is no longer available a day ahead, and I am no longer the energetic person I was back then. Hey, time flies, we all age. You all have probably noticed I am not as active as I was years back, but thankfully Kat, JS, Robin, Jason, and others have stepped up, filled in, taken up the chalenges, and kept all of it going. Bless them all. Am so thankful.
Thank you for all you did. I always read your summaries back then and still enjoy your posts.

Yes, but you have to be a Nielsen family for them to detect what you're watching. If they haven't put some type of gizmo on your TV, there is literally no way (other than streaming) that networks can tell what you're watching.

You can't just buy a TV set that has a chip that automatically transmits your viewing habits to the networks. I bought a brand new TV a few weeks ago and read the manual cover to cover. There was nothing in there about some chip that automatically shares your viewing habits with anyone.

Sorry if I was not clear..........I did state that Nielsen always has the homeowner's permission. It's been a lot of years, but I was one once......don't think they changed that rule.

Yes, of course Nielsen has the homeowner's permission. You have to sign a contract with them to participate. My father was a participant before he died and I had to deal with Nielsen to break the contract, which was supposed to last for two years. You get paid a nominal fee, like $100 a year. And the contract states you're not supposed to tell anyone you're a Nielsen participant during your time with them. Theoretically, networks could try to bribe you to help their ratings. It must've happened at some point, otherwise, it wouldn't be part of the contract.

Poirot, thanks for confirming that Nielsen’s is still around. According to the source I checked, it does rank streamed shows, which is terrible news for Abe and B&S.
