My sister standing in her driveway. They will be watching the wind closely. This picture is pointing towards the ocean. She's about 11 blocks from the water and south of the Santa Monica Pier.
There is another large fire in Altadena (Pasadena) They are advertising on air to to have any firefighters come in to help out, they are that strapped for help.
My sister is packing up pictures and important papers in case they have to go.
*** edit to add my sister's received evacuation SET orders. The next will be GO.
This is heartbreaking to see and thoughts are with all those affected. I saw on the news today that a group of firefighters that have special aviation equipment to fight fires have gone down to assist. I'm sure there'll be any available firefighters from all over to help with this scary situation.
The Santa Ana winds are something else. I saw on the local TV station KTLA that these aren't the normal hot Santa Ana's but cold Santa Ana's. Normally the winds can raise the temps to over 90 degrees. The winds are strong and around 50mph sustained. It's caused by a low in Arizona the same low that will bring snow and Ice to Texas. Until it moves off the winds will be uncontrollable. Same for the fires.
It's hard to fly in these winds as they cause fire tornadoes. Pretty to see, from a safe distance but uber scary in person.
The evacuation zone for the Sunset Fire in the Hollywood Hills includes the Dolby Theater, where the Academy Awards are held, as well as the Hollywood Bowl.
As another fire began to alight in the Los Angeles area on Wednesday, residents in the Hollywood Hills — as well as onlookers worldwide — feared for the safety of those involved, not to mention the iconic Hollywood Sign.
However, the Sunset Fire, which broke out in Runyon Canyon, is now 100% contained, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said on Thursday, Jan. 9.
There is going to be much fake news, we just have to get the facts.
My favorite "TIN HAT" rumor is this fire wouldn't have happened if LA had a Male Fire Chief. Kristen Crowley the current Fire Chief is a 22 year veteran of the department. I'm sure she had everything to do with Hurricane force winds.... and a drought....
Wow Robin! Because only a man could be of any help. (Eyeroll here).
About 20 years ago, I worked at the school board and had to do snow clearing...the snow blower wouldn't start with the pull string. So I called our repair department and the guy says "oh well, you probably just need a man to start that" (eye roll again). I said "wow, can a *bleep* start a snowblower?" I heard the phone drop and laughed at him. He ended up fixing a bunch of stuff on the motor.
Hope I didn't offend anyone by my word. I'll head to Rews corner...
