On yesterday's episode, Marlena FINALLY and rightfully so referred to BOTH Brady and Eric as her sons. Since Marlena raised Brady from infancy, she is for all intents and purposes his mother. When he was a child, he used to call her "mom". Only when the character was aged to a teenager did the show suddenly create strife between these 2 characters. Marlena and Brady resolved their differences and he started calling her mom again. Then Brady left with Chloe and was recast. Since Eric Martsolf (Brady) took over the role, we see a "distance" between Marlena and Brady. He has been living with Victor and seems to spend more time with Maggie than Marlena.
It's not the first time we've seen situations on this show where there is a disregard for family structure. In the past we saw Stephanie and Chelsea date their adopted Uncle Max. We recently saw Eve flirting with her stepcousin Eric. When Kristen first came on the show, she was engaged to her adoptive brother Tony.
I realize this is a soap but there should be some degree of reality too. Especially when there are unrelated characters on the canvas who are being used as filler. A family doesn't always consist of blood relatives.
