11/14/24 - Donuts and Pickles

I like crispy snappy dill pickles however my tongue and inside my mouth don't.... I also like bread and butter pickles... they cause less of a reaction but still a reaction.... boo....
Yesterday was an interesting day scanning tickets and watching people attend a soccer game in the really cold day. Some came prepared, long pants, sleeves, coats and blankets... others in shorts..... once we got inside the box office things improved for us.....out of the wind which made the cool day cooler..... the person in charge brought is water, but no food..... noon to 5 and a single bottle of water..... other places I've volunteered have always provided something....
HB's car is tagged and fixed now so he's good to go till the next mechanical issue......the Honda van is only 24 years old.....so sometimes things just get old.....

be sure to hang a pickle on your holiday tree.....

I googled pickle in a Christmas tree..... because I had no idea why people put pickles in their trees.....

A Union soldier was starving in a prison camp and asked a guard for a pickle on Christmas Eve. The pickle gave the soldier the strength to survive and return home, where he and his family began the tradition of hanging a pickle on the tree.

Okay... I guess that makes sense.....

A sunny day in the 60s.

A busy morning at the little library. The library has a cleaning crew, but one thing they don't do is
dust. I dusted shelves in the kid area today. The bottom ones were awful. I'll going to dust certain
areas when I go.

I like sweet and sour pickles. My mom made bread and butter pickles, but I didn't like them.

Wilde Woman, thanks for letting us know it's National Pickle day.

robin, I'm glad HB's van is ready to go. I hope you're resting today after being outside yesterday.

rf, I like Vlasic pickles too.

I hope everyone has nice rest of the day.

Hello everyone. Cold and rainy here. I'm still chilled to the bone, and I haven't been outside since I came to work at 6:45. One more hour before I have to go back out to go home.

robinsnest, I never heard that version of the pickle ornament origin before.

Pickle ornaments and pins were a marketing / advertizing tool given away by Heinz at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893.Being from the greater Pittsburgh area, we've always had pickle ornaments, pins, whistles, etc. My Mom was upset when my brother broke the ornament back in the mid 1950s, and made my Dad go out to buy a new one.

LOL, I never ever heard of a pickle ornament before........interesting what we learn here...........

I know I have some Christmas decorations/ornaments I can donate to the Christmas sale comine up in another week here, trouble is, just hate trying to get the boxes down and open them up.
Too early........for me! December is coming pretty soon, and I would never put a Christmas tree up before Thanksgiving. Actually, I now just put up a 3 ft. artificial tree, so have a lot of ornaments I don't use. Some you would probably call antique, as they are pretty old, belonged to my mom, they were on the tree when I was a kid. LOL

Interesting story on the history of the pickle ornament. I love stuff like this and I love Dill Pickles. My mother used to jar pickles.

A favourite pub snack we like to get are called Frickles, which is a dill pickle quartered lengthwise, breaded and deep fried and served with a dip like dill pickle dip or ranch. I like blue cheese dressing with mine but Mike is allergic to blue cheese.

Days here have been above average for this time of year however it is supposed to get cooler after tomorrow. Off to vball tonight and we'll be fighting for last place. Lol!!!

Robin, I don't know what those old guys were singing about but it looked like they were having a good time! I wonder if the story of the Union soldier was true--if he really did survive on a pickle. HB's van is just two years younger than my old clunker F-150 that's been smashed up a few times.

Poirot, I never had heard of a pickle ornament either. Yes, we learn lots of things here. It would be sad to get rid of your ornaments, especially the ones that were used by your mother. But if they can be used by anyone it's better than what's become of mine. Most of my mother's had seen their better days by the time I got a few of them, and now all of mine have been out in my storage building and I'm sure the heat has ruined them by now. I always thought I'd go through all that stuff--someday. Now I doubt I'll ever do it.

Kat, a cleaning crew that doesn't dust? That's one of two things I'd want done the most in my own house. If I had someone to come in and clean floors and dust for me I'd be thrilled even if they didn't do anything else.

Squirrel, I sure hope you don't get a relapse of pneumonia after getting chilled like that. 6:45 is awfully early to be at work!

Sexton, Vlassics are good!

Wilde Woman, it's interesting that today was pickle day, since I bought a jar of pickles, which I very rarely do, although I like just about any kind of pickle. Or I did... Last week I bought some regular hamburger dill slices but when I went to eat one it smelled unpleasant to me. So today I bought some kosher dill slices. Haven't tried them yet.

Ever since I had Covid over a year ago they have been a few foods that have had a peculiar smell and taste to me, bad enough that I won't eat them. Vinegar is one of them so I'm guessing that's why the pickles had that smell. Another is sour cream, which I always liked a lot but now can't eat, due to that same smell.

I went to town today. My niece did too but we didn't go together. I needed to go to Wal-Mart and the grocery store. She needed to go to the feed store and some other places. She gets big bags of animal food that will fit in her suv but not in my car. Also, she's always in a hurry to get home and she was going around by another town to pick up a cat she'd had "fixed," and she was going to do an errand for me in that town. But we did meet for lunch.

It got warmer than I'd expected today and I got more food than I'd planned so I was wishing I had brought my cooler along. I did take a couple of the little lightly insulated bags you can buy at the grocery store so I made out okay. It was a beautiful day, low 80s*, not much wind, but the car gets real hot inside while sitting on the parking lot in the sun.

Once again I got a phone call before I got to post this, which was right after sundown at 5:40.

Hi, Muzz. My niece talked me into trying the fried pickles a few months ago. Interesting..... Frickles is a good name for them. I hadn't ever heard that.

OC: You did the right thing by getting rid of those nasty smelling pickles. If it smells off, it is not a good idea to eat them.

Always check expiration dates, too. Some items are okay a few weeks after the date, but not always. I once had moldy roasted red peppers, those little ones in a jar. I forgot about them, and they did expire.

I threw out several items in the frig a couple weeks ago. You use something a few times, it is "still good", then guess it sits and you finally are gonna use again.........Oh, no you are not. I had a small jar of ketsup, dated June of 2023! Ranch dressing with the date label missing as was evidently torn orr when first opened. I have currently a jar of mustard dated April 2024 and am debating. With only 1 person in a household, some items just are not used up quickly. I have a friend/neighbor who lives across the street......she eats out every day, lunch or dinner. She says she doesn't cook........lol. Am guessing that may be why, as when her husband was alive, she did......(Meat I keep in the freezer, bread too, at times)

Poirot, I was just about to post the same thing. I throw out way too much food but as you stated, it just goes bad when there's only one person. Condiments are a big waste in my house. I don't eat them often but like to have them once in a while. I put lots of things in the freezer in addition to meats and vegetables. Chips like Fritos and Cheetos (potato chips don't do so well), crackers, cookies, and the list goes on. I used to cook with pecans a lot so would buy the fresh ones each fall and put them in the freezer. I have some in there now that have been there at least five years! Maybe longer. I think they will probably go out soon. I've put it off too many times.

Wilde Woman, I like your advice. I'm a little paranoid about food being spoiled (probably too much so). But "when it doubt, throw it out." "Better safe than sorry." And all that stuff.....

Robin, that pickle tree....
