Wow... Polio.... we had a girl in an iron lung on our street... they had the lung placed in the front window so she would watch us play in the street.... when available we were taken to get our sugar cube of vaccine... no questions asked..... eat the sugar cube....

I voted Monday after a 2+ hour wait in line, yesterday HB voted same place redone line and it took only 45 minutes.... BEAST loved watching people vote. We wandered the property, it was an Extension Facility that in spring and summer holds classes on planting and is the local 4-H facility. So there were lots of great smells for the Beast....

Poirot, I've been thinking of your issue with rings. Do you have a trusted Jeweler in your town? I'm sure that this is something they've dealt with so they may have ideas. I have mother's rings. Rings with the birthstone of each parent and child. I have 3 bands each kid will get their own band. I toyed with necklace of a tree, but it was going to be too hard to add a new stone if a new child arrived. The Jeweler had the idea of bands.

Happy Thursday to all.....

Belated Happy Birthday, ShaunP! I'm sorry I missed it yesterday. Hope you had a wonderful dinner with your Dad and brother.

Good morning everyone. Already out to school and back to the office. A beautiful crisp fall day here.

We had to line up for the Salk polio vaccine injections in the 1950s before the Sabin sugar cube doses came out in 1962 so I ended up having the vaccines both ways. The Salk inactivated polio vaccine was developed at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) by a team led by Dr Jonas Salk.

Another summer day here. It will be the same tomorrow. The maple trees turned red for
fall in my area. The rest of the tree leaves are turning brown.

I remember taking a sugar pill many moons ago.

I'll be leaving in about an hour to see Beetlejuice the musical. I hope it's ok.

robin, I'm glad HB didn't have too long to vote.

rs, I'm glad you'll be in the office this afternoon.

Wilde Woman, I hope your area gets rain soon. We're under a burn ban in my state.

I hope everyone has a pleasant rest of the day.

I remember being with relatives in Milwaukee as Chicago was quarantined!!!! It was summer......did get to go home finally. My mom being a nurse got me and my sis the polio shots in the ER at the hospital. Don't remember too much about back then, was a kid.
tis 50° here......chilly & windy, sun was out for a bit, but is all clouded up again. Have to go get blood checked in a few minutes. Keep forgetting to make appt at eye doc.......Even tho I got new glasses in March, either the presciption was done wrong.........or my eyes have deteriorated some more.

I remember the polio shots. I think we can tell who are the oldies here lol. I've given up doughnuts, but I dream about them. I can't get away with eating everything I like anymore. I got scared when the scales showed me a terrifying number back in June, and modified everything about my eating. I'm down 25 pounds and it is amazing how the hip and joint pain dissipates as well.

Beautiful day in Canada's Capital. The last two days were a resurggence of summer but now it is a typical breezy fall day, sunny and cool but gorgeous out with the autumn leaves.

Rough afternoon
Thanksgiving looks bleak
My brother and SIL who live locally are just going to Galveston to eat out wit their daughter....I'm not invited thus far....it would have been nice to be invited since it will also be my birthday

My sister in Tomball will not do much.... Her remission from lymphoma is holding, but she tires easily

My brother and SIL who live north of Houston they don't bother to even check up on me

Holidays stink

I left at intermission since I didn't like the show "Beetlejuice". I didn't like the first movie and I thought I would
give it a chance. There were strobe lights moving around while you waited for show to begin. I get hit in the
face every 30 seconds.

rf, I agree holidays stink. Maybe someone at your church will invite you. Let them know. I think it's sad
during holidays churches don't care about members who live alone.

brisbydog, good luck on your diet. I don't eat a lot of things because of my stomach issues. I didn't realize until a
couple of weeks ago how much sugar is in juice. So, I'm buying juice with less sugar.

Poirot, here's your reminder to call the eye doctor. Do you have a wall calendar? I put a lot of notes on mine to
remember to do things.

So many folks want off Thanksgiving week it's likely I'll be working. Boss knows it will be my birthday so who knows

I use wall calendars like that too, Kat. Sorry you didn't enjoy the show. I suspected you wouldn't but at least now you know. Your whole state is under a burn ban? They do it by counties here. My county has been under one for about ten years, I think, but the danger lessens temporarily following a good rain.

Sexton, I'm so sorry about your holidays. It is shocking and sad to me how many people are alone in this world. Society has gravitated toward focus on immediate family (for those who have any) so the inclusion of extended family is almost a thing of the past. Kat makes a good point about churches. There should be some there who would be happy to include others in their holiday activities but somehow they aren't aware of the need. Many churches have become so large the people don't know one another unless they've organized into small groups. When I'm alone on holidays I pretend it's just another weekend. Weekends are like mini-holidays to me--I feel shut off from the whole world. I used to wish for them to pass in a hurry but at my age I try not to wish any of my time away.

B-dog, how nice to get some relief for your joints! Your weather and surroundings sound so lovely.

Poirot, I hope your blood work was uncomplicated. Did you make your eye appointment? I sure need to do that myself.

Wilde Woman, I hope you get some rain soon. I guess brush fires wouldn't directly get into where you live but you might have to endure smoke from them. I just saw on our "local" news that there are fires in the Wichita Mountains, which are across the Red River in Oklahoma, not far from Wichita Falls, Texas. My local tv station is in Wichita Falls, though it is some distance from me.

Squirrel, I'm glad you're having some nice fall weather too.

Robin, now we know voting can be fun for dogs too! Thinking back to polio, what a devastating disease. So sad for that little girl and many others, who had to look at the world from an iron lung. I'm a little confused by the comments here because I don't believe I ever got the shots for polio but I do remember well getting the sugar cubes at school and I'm pretty sure it was during my 8th grade year, which would have been 1955-56. In my memory it seems it was such a big deal for two reasons: There was finally a way to prevent this horrible disease, and it came in a sugar cube!

I went and had the MRI this morning. You are all "lucky" that I'm too tired to tell much about it now but after a sleep-deprived night for both my niece and myself, we managed to get there by 8:00, only to be told my appointment was for tomorrow morning! I had a mini-meltdown. (Not feeling well anyway, with the arm pain and being on the pain medication). I know I'm forgetful but when I make appointments over the phone I always write down the day and time while I'm on the phone, then I read it back to the person a couple of times to make sure I have it right. Anyway, the lady was very nice about it and said they would work me in.

I've lucked into several MRI's, the worst was for my left wrist, they injected some "goo" into it then I had to jump onto the MRI table in the Superman position, one arm forward the other back along my side.....then in with the banging and more banging..... My complaint my wrist hurt all the time worse when I tried to say open a door any twisting motion or grasping motion. Seems I'd torn a tendon, they wouldn't have found it without the goo and MRI. Surgery fixed it. Then insurance refused to pay for the surgery..... seems the injury is most common in abuse cases. Alas, I couldn't prove I wasn't abused, but they couldn't prove I had been abused. After 7 months of fighting insurance they ended up paying the bill.

Rest and take care of your self OC.

a little calf to make you feel better....

Kat, 68 out of 75 counties would probably cover most of the state. Wow!

Me too, Sexton! That's what you need, a pet calf. Just kidding. Pet calves quickly become very large, clumsy animals. What an adorable little guy in Robin's picture though.

Robin, that's crazy about all the positions they put you in for MRIs. I too have had more MRIs than I can remember or count but since most of them were on my head, I didn't have to get into odd positions for them. They did have a challenge in the beginning though, getting all the coordinates positioned right for what they needed to get. In the early ones I'd spend up to two hours in the machine. Today I laughed when I asked the young lady if I was going to be in there for very long and she, in all seriousness, said, "I'm sorry, yes, it will take about 20 minutes." You said they injected "goo" into your wrist. Maybe it was the same thing they always injected into my vein before the MRI, which they called "contrast." You said you had a torn tendon. This morning I was wondering if I had something torn in there and I was thinking I hope the contrast wasn't needed to see whatever it is. I wouldn't want to have to go back and do it again. Though I didn't have to get into odd positions today, except for having something under my arm and being told to hold my hand is a bit of an awkward position. Also, they put some kind of big, heavy thing over my upper body. Still, I managed to doze a few times with all that and the noise going on! It seems strange that your insurance tried not to pay for a surgery like that.

OC, will you be seeing your doctor soon to find out what is wrong with shoulder?

OC... I was taken by ambulance to the hospital in 2012 with a dislocated fractured ankle. I had emergency surgery to repair, plates, pins, the entire amazing work done. When I got the bill it was over $500,000, but my share was just $1200. Ya, I have no idea why. I did have to pay the entire ambulance fee as I didn't get it pre-approved. I didn't win that battle but did get the anesthesiologist fee covered. That one was denied also because it wasn't pre-approved. The ambulance was $500. The anesthesiologist fee that wasn't covered because it wasn't pre-approved was $8,000 Not sure how to get either of those approved before the event but I also don't understand how $500,000 breaks down to $1200.

I hope they find something that is easily fixable for you.

I'm a little confused by the comments here because I don't believe I ever got the shots for polio but I do remember well getting the sugar cubes at school and I'm pretty sure it was during my 8th grade year, which would have been 1955-56. OC, the Sabin vaccine on a sugar cube wasn't until 1962. Dr Sabin got the patent in 1961, but there wasn't enough mass produced for the "sugar cube" oral vaccinations until 1962.
The US Dept of Health had mass "sugar cube" vaccinations for families in local school districts throughout the country. That must be what you remember. My school district had a band playing and popcorn to keep everyone occupied while waiting in the long lines.

1955 through the beginning of 1961 was only the Salk polio vaccine that was an injection.
